Introduction
An acoustic guitar is an unusual instrument. Guitarist Al Di Meola, once said you know a man by how he plays an acoustic guitar. You must admit that this sentence has a hidden meaning. It is surprising that many guitarists start their music adventure beginning with an acoustic guitar, and then after years of experience return to it re-discovering its beauty once again. For me, its authenticity and faithfulness of sound are the most fascinating aspects. The final sound depends only on us. A guitar plays well only when the artist has suitable abilities and techniques. You cannot hide your playing flaws by using various guitar effects.
Fingerstyle
Probably some of you will think about it as a technique of playing using your fingers. It obviously is true, but it is also something much more than that. In a sense ‘fingerstyle’ is a non-guitar attitude to playing this instrument. It is rather a technique similar to playing a piano; playing bass and chords along with melody. In practice the right thumb makes the same work as the left hand of a pianist, while the right hand fingers reflect the right hand of the pianist.
In fingerstyle every finger of the right hand has an important function:
- Thumb is responsible for bass strings E,A,D
- Index finger is responsible for string G
- Middle finger is responsible for string B
- Ring finger is responsible for violin string E
The right hand middle finger plays a very important role in playing. It is called the “melody finger” and it is connected with revealing melody in compositions.
It is worth paying attention to the work of the left hand. Classic guitarists can be indignant due to using the thumb for catching the notes on the neck of the instrument and in extreme cases on bass a string A. Very often two notes on adjacent strings can be played with just one finger tip.
